Some Sweet Figures

By Anne-Lise

The French candy market has a turnover of nearly two million euros. It is composed of five categories:

Bubblegum are first with a total turnover of 590 million Euros. In second position are “children” candies (€450 millions turnover). Pocket candies( 64% sugar free) are third (240 million) followed by regional and traditional specialties and candied fruits(€234 million). Candies and sweets for adults and family are in last position( €216 million).

On average, French people eat 3, 72kg of candies per year, i.e. 10 g/day, which represents one candy per day per person!

Nonetheless, the French are lower consumers than their European neighbors. Hence, Germans eat 5,7kg of candies per person per year, English people 5,2 kg, and Danish people 6,4kg!

Children are not the only one to love candies and the market has to suggest an offer adapted to grown-ups who favor formula that associate “health” and “well-being” and take into account their concerns for hygiene and food balance: freshness, tooth white, sugar free…

As for children, their prefer loud colors, extreme savors and associations of taste and texture.
